چکیده

This paper presents a technique for saving power dissipation in large datapaths by reducing unnecessary switching activity on buses. The focus of the technique is on achieving effective power savings with minimal overhead. When a bus is not going to be used in a datapath, it is held in a quiescent state by stopping the propagation of switching activity through the module(s) driving the bus. The “observability don’t-care condition” of a bus is defined to detect unnecessary switching activity on the bus. This condition is used to gate control signals going to the bus-driver modules so that switching activity on the module inputs does not propagate to the bus. A methodology for automatically synthesizing gated control signals from the registertransfer-level description of a design is presented. The technique has very low area, delay, power, and designer effort overhead. It was applied to one of the integer execution units of a 64-bit, twoway superscalar RISC microprocessor. Experimental results from running various application programs on the microprocessor show an average of 26.6% reduction in dynamic switching power in the execution unit, with no increase in critical path delay and negligible area overhead.

Modeling and Simulation of Substrate Noise in Mixed-Signal Circuits Applied to a Special VCO

The mixed-signal circuits with both analog and digital blocks on a single chip have wide applications in communication and RF circuits. Integrating these two blocks can cause serious problems especially in applications requiring fast digital circuits and high performance analog blocks. Fast switching in digital blocks generates a noise which can be introduced to analog circuits by the common su...

Activity-driven clock design

In this paper, we investigate reducing the power consumption of a synchronous digital system by minimizing the total power consumed by the clock signals. We construct activity-driven clock trees wherein sections of the clock tree are turned off by gating the clock signals. Since gating the clock signal implies that additional control signals and gates are needed, there exists a tradeoff between...

Exploring Mixed Voltage Swings for Low Energy/Operation of Datapath Circuits

GOALS The portable communications industry will be one of the fastest growing consumer market segments in the next decade. Most portable devices are essentially digital signal processing (DSP) circuits interfacing with information from the real-world environment and/or human operators (e.g., handwriting and speech recognition, image understanding). A majority of high-performance DSP circuits (e...

Implicit FSM decomposition applied to low-power design

Clock-gating techniques are very effective in the reduction of the switching activity in sequential logic circuits. In this paper, we describe a clock-gating technique based on finite-state machine (FSM) decomposition. The approach is based on the computation of two sub-FSMs that together have the same functionality as the original FSM. For all the transitions within one sub-FSM, the clock for ...
